Hurricane Katrina Relief - What We Can Do

It is said that crisis exposes the best and the worst of humanity. We have been encouraged by stories and images of heroism and sacrifice. We have had our hearts broken at the sight of crushed homes, crying children, dead bodies, and the images of desperation. We have been angered by violence and looting. The media have displayed the examples of the best and worst of humanity.

What can we do? We can pray. Prayer is real. Prayer is what God expects of us! Prayer is how we cooperate with what He is doing in the universe and in the hearts and minds of people. But God also expects us to put hands and feet and money to our prayers. As the Epistle of James says:

Jam 2:15-16 ESV If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?

Monetary Donations

The most efficient way to help is to give money through reputable agencies, agencies who will share the Gospel as they distribute help. These agencies can leverage the purchase and distribution of necessary items. We have listed five Christian agencies. Donations can be made on-line to these agencies:

The ACN has launched a fund to support parishes on the front line of response to the disaster -- those whose towns and churches will receive the flow of refugees from the storm. The ACN website now has a PayPal link for the most rapid response. Checks payable to the Anglican Communion Network and designated for the Katrina Relief Fund may be sent to the ACN office, 535 Smithfield Street, Suite 910, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.

Samaritan's Purse Disaster Relief teams have begun operations in the vicinity of Mobile, Alabama, an area battered by high winds, torrential rains, and an estimated 12-foot storm surge that shoved the Mobile River over its banks. Our teams will work westward into devastated areas of Mississippi and Louisiana as conditions permit.  Our Disaster Relief teams work in partnership with local churches to ensure that spiritual needs are met, too. Teams share the love of Jesus Christ, pray with residents, and present them with a Bible when the work is completed.  (828) 262-1980 |  PO Box 3000  |  Boone, NC 28607

The Salvation Army is currently providing services to storm victims and first responders in the Gulf Coast states.  Financial contributions are greatly needed, and provide The Salvation Army with the funds to purchase what storm victims need. They also allow The Salvation Army to assess the unique needs of individuals and families, as well as put money back into the economy of those communities affected by the disaster.  Visit your local Wal-Mart or Sam's Club to donate to The Salvation Army's Hurricane Katrina relief effort or call
